The research at the Department of Biomedical Engineering bridges the gap between clinical applications and medical technology development. This highly interdisciplinary endeavor is organized in four focal areas: Biomechanics and Biomaterials, Imaging and Computational Medicine, Laser and Robotics, and Regenerative Medicine. The current flagship project of the department is the aim to develop a robotic endoscope to perform contact-free bone surgery with laser light (MIRACLE, short for Minimally Invasive Robot-Assisted Computer-guided LaserosteotomE). Furthermore, the DBE established a so-called Core Facility „Micro- and Nanotomography“ (MiNa) – users from within and outside the University can make use of state-of-the-art X-Ray systems.
