Hightech Research Center HFZ
Oral Health Technology OHT is part of the Hightech Research Center (HFZ) at the University Hospital Basel. It was founded in 2004 by the Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgeon and visionary Professor Hans-Florian Zeilhofer.
In this multidisciplinary research environment, physicians, mathematicians, computer scientists, physicists, engineers, artists and scientists from other specialties are closely cooperating in international teams, thus transcending the boundaries that occasionally impede the work of conventional research centres.
At the HFZ, which is tightly linked to the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Basel, interdisciplinary, flexible research teams solve problems that arise from the daily clinical work. In cooperation with university partners in Switzerland and abroad, but also in close cooperation with the industry, new technologies and work processes in diagnostics and treatment are developed based on concrete clinical problems with the focus on Oral Health Technologies. The problem-solving approaches developed in cooperation with other research groups are continuously evaluated by surgeons regarding clinical applicability.
The main objective of the associated research groups is the development of technologies to market. Consequently, research results range from the development of new surgical tools, medical additive manufacturing, including patient specific implants for cranio-maxillofacial surgery, new methods of three-dimensional surface analysis and a special, miniaturized 3D real-time navigation system for intra-operative application in complex craniofacial surgical procedures, to new laser technologies and innovative developments in robotics. Additionally, another research focus at the centre is telemedicine and advanced medical education.
Based on the excellent research results of the recent years, several medtech start-up companies could be founded.
