Michaela successfully defended her PhD dissertation

We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Michaela Maintz. On June 24, 2025, Michaela successfully defended her PhD dissertation at the Biozentrum, University of Basel with the highest honors – summa cum laude. The development and biomechanical validation of patient-specific implants, with an emphasis on automating the design process to enable more efficient and individualized treatment solutions.

Esma Bahar selected for the ON/EORS Orthoregeneration Award

Congratulations to Esma Bahar Tankus for receiving the 2025 ON/EORS Orthoregeneration Award. Her award-winning abstract, “3D Bioprinting of Osteochondral Units with Human Nasal Chondrocytes Using a Granular Composite of Hyaluronic Acid, Collagen, and Hydroxyapatite,” was selected by the ON Foundation and presented at the 33rd EORS - European Orthopaedic Research Society Annual Meeting in Davos.

New Chin Through 3D Printing at University Hospital Basel

A significant breakthrough in personalized medicine has been achieved at the University Hospital Basel: for the first time, a 3D-printed chin implant, custom-designed for a patient, was successfully implanted. The Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (MKG), led by Prof. Florian M. Thieringer and his research group Swiss MAM, along with Deputy Head Dr. Neha Sharma, PhD, is setting new standards in modern medical technology.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery wins two research grants

Over the next three years, PD. Dr. Dr. Lukas Seifert and Dr. Benito Benitez will collaborate on MKG research projects with support from the Geistlich Stucki Foundation. Seifert will focus on the clinical use of 3D-printed PCL meshes for bone defect reconstruction compared to titanium meshes, while Benitez will work on improving bone regeneration in children with cleft lip and palate.

Project wins the advanced research grant from Osteology Foundation

Neha Sharma and Florian Thieringer from the SwissMAM research group, together with Nadja Rohr from the University Center for Dental Medicine Basel (UZB), have received an Osteology Foundation advanced research grant. Their project uses 3D printing and bio-resorbable composite meshes to support guided bone regeneration and promote natural bone healing through patient-specific solutions.
