Best Clinical Publication Awards for Anas Taha

Dr. Anas Taha has won the Award for Best Clinical Publication of Swiss Society of Thoracic Surgery. He presented his paper "Second Primary Cancer Among Patients with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Following the Chernobyl Disaster" on the Thoracic Day on 22 November in Bern. Anas is a member of Prof. Phillipe Cattin’s research group at the Center for medical Image Analysis & Navigation (CIAN) and is a senior surgeon in Prof. Robert Rosenberg’s team in the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center of Cantonal Hospital Basel-Land.

The paper presents results from a retrospective cohort study conducted in the Republic of Belarus over a 31-year time frame. It reports the increased incidence of solid secondary tumors in men and women over a 31-year time frame after the Chernobyl disaster. Moreover, there was a statistically significant increased risk of second tumors of the breast, colon, rectum, mesothelium, eye, adnexa, meninges, and adrenal glands as well as Kaposi sarcoma.
