Athina Papadopoulou is a certified neurologist working as a senior physician ("Oberärztin") in the University Hospital of Basel. She studied medicine in Ioannina, Greece and absolved her doctoral thesis as well as her habilitation in the University of Basel, Switzerland. She was also a post-doctoral fellow in the Charité, Berlin (2017-2018).
Her research focuses on the use of imaging methods (optical coherence tomography, OCT; magnetic resonance imaging, MRI) to quantify neurodegeneration in the visual pathway and the entire central nervous system in multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurological diseases, like idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH).
Moreover, she is specialized in the treatment of migraine, headache and pain disorders and uses clinical, imaging and other markers (such as quantitative sensory testing and MRI) to improve phenotyping and understanding of these diseases.
Research Areas:
Retinal Markers of progression in Multiple Sclerosis
Structural and Functional assessment of the Visual Pathway in neuroinflammatory/neurodegenerative diseases
Associations between Retinal markers and other (imaging/fluid) biomarkers in Multiple Sclerosis
Structural and Functional changes in patients with Migraine and in Central Pain
Digital Phenotyping in Migraine
