After obtaining a PhD in cancer immunology, Merel worked at the Dutch Cancer Society in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (2007-2018), where she served as policy advisor and senior program coordinator. Subsequently, she became Head of the Research Support Office for the Paediatrics departments at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (2018-2024). Merel joined the DBE as Research Coordinator in November 2024.
