We’re thrilled to announce that Dr. Andreea-Alexandra Aldea has been awarded the prestigious Young Talents in Clinical Research (YTCR) grant by the SAMS (Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences) and the Gottfried and Julia Bangerter-Rhyner Foundation!
Her project, "On the choroid plexus volume in multiple sclerosis: A longitudinal analysis of data from the Swiss multiple sclerosis cohort study (SMSC)", is set to investigate groundbreaking correlations between choroid plexus volume and MS disease characteristics using cutting-edge MRI segmentation techniques. Mentored by Prof. Dr. Özgür Yaldizli, and backed by the brilliant teams at ThINk Basel and RC2NB, this research promises to shed new light on the complexities of MS and contribute valuable insights to the field. 🔬💡

A new grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation for the CHORNEXUS study.

Prof. Özgür Yaldizli, a senior consultant neurologist at the University Hospital Basel and research group leader at RC2NB, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has received a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation for the CHORNEXUS study.
This study will be conducted within the framework of an European research network known as ERA-NET NEURON 2024. ERA-NET NEURON is a collaborative initiative involving 35 research funding organizations and ministries from 28 countries, dedicated to supporting basic, clinical, and translational research in various fields related to the brain and its diseases.
CHORNEXUS aims to investigate the principles of brain choroid plexus-mediated interactions between the brain and body in the context of systemic and peripheral pathologies. The study will be carried out in collaboration with research groups in Norway, Germany, Latvia, and France.
At the University Hospital Basel, Prof. Yaldizli will focus specifically on examining the role of the brain choroid plexus in multiple sclerosis and chronic pain. The three-year study will be conducted under the auspices of RC2NB in close collaboration with Prof. Cristina Granziera and Prof. Jens Kuhle. It will begin in 2025 and last for three years.

Cristina Granziera bridges the gap between biomedical engineering and clinical application as researcher at the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Dr. Mario Alberto Ocampo Pineda as the new PostDoc in the ThINk group led by Prof. Cristina Granziera. Mario did a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Verona, where he developed methods for processing MRI to describe brain tissue. In the ThINk group, he will be part of the team responsible for processing and managing the images and data of the group.
