The lab at the University of Basel advances surgery by integrating artificial intelligence, deep learning, and augmented reality technologies.
Our multidisciplinary team combines clinical excellence with technological innovation, developing predictive models, advanced decision-support systems, and leveraging large language models to enable data-driven, precision surgical care.
Augmented reality represents a core pillar of our research. We develop and implement immersive AR platforms that allow surgeons to visualize patient-specific anatomy directly within the real-world surgical environment, seamlessly integrating imaging data into the operative field.
These solutions support preoperative planning, intraoperative guidance, and surgical training, enhancing spatial awareness, precision, and real-time decision-making.
In parallel, we apply deep learning algorithms for medical image analysis, automated segmentation, risk stratification, and outcome prediction. By combining AI-driven analytics with AR-based visualization, we create intelligent, interactive environments that transform how surgeons interpret data and perform procedures.
The lab operates within a strong collaborative network of leading universities and hospitals across Europe and the United States, encompassing more than 30 centers. This international consortium enables access to large-scale, multicenter datasets and accelerates the clinical translation of innovative technologies.
Through these efforts, we develop cutting-edge personalized medicine solutions, improve surgical outcomes, optimize training, and address the economic challenges of modern healthcare systems with scalable, intelligent technologies.
