Martin Styner Appointed Junior Group Leader

Martin Styner

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Martin Styner has been appointed Junior Group Leader within our Department. His research group, the NeuroImaging Analysis Group (NIAG), is a sub-unit of the Center for Image Analysis and Navigation (CIAN), headed by Prof. Philippe Cattin.

Dr. Martin Styner is an internationally recognized expert in medical image computing and neuroimaging, with a distinguished academic career. He earned his MS in Computer Science from ETH Zürich in 1997 and completed his PhD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001. After leading research groups at Duke University and the University of Bern, he joined UNC Chapel Hill as Assistant Professor in 2004, received tenure as Associate Professor in 2012, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2023. In 2025, he joined the University of Basel on a part-time basis and now shares his research activities between Basel and UNC. Martin Styner co-authored over 500 peer-reviewed publications, holds a Google Scholar h-index of 100, and received awards in 2020 and 2023 as a “highly cited researcher” by Clarivate.

At the DBE, the NeuroImaging Analysis Group (NIAG), led by Martin Styner focuses on developing and applying novel neuroimaging methods as well as open source software tools for the analysis of structural and diffusion MRI data. Neuroimaging applications of these methods are aimed at neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorder, in particular Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, and Alzheimer’s Disease, with the goal towards better understanding and the discovery of disorder subtypes for the generation of personalized intervention plans.
