Center for Intelligent Optics

The Center for Intelligent Optics (CIO) leads cutting-edge research in the development of advanced optical and laser-based systems, with a focus on diagnosis, treatment, and intervention technologies in the fields of Laser and Robotics. Our research spans innovative areas such as light manipulation, Fourier optics, light-tissue interactions, spectroscopy, imaging, and laser science. By incorporating machine learning, we are building smart, automated technologies that drive progress in medical procedures.

A core objective of our research is to achieve minimal invasiveness, which directs our focus toward miniaturizing optical systems to ensure precision in intricate medical applications. Our flagship project, MIRACLE, now in its second phase, is developing a Minimally Invasive Robot-Assisted Computer-guided Laserosteotome. This includes the creation of a fiber-based laser system with real-time feedback, enabling extremely precise cuts tailored to minimally invasive surgeries. A central challenge and goal of the project is miniaturization: fitting multiple devices into a compact endoscope to operate in confined spaces while maintaining high precision. This represents a significant advancement over current bone saw technologies, which often result in only moderate precision, longer recovery times, and reduced implant stability.

The MIRACLE II Project., generously funded by the Werner Siemens Foundation, is the cornerstone of CIO's work at the Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBE). During the first phase of the MIRACLE project, the BLOG group, which preceded CIO, was one of four key groups involved. Our progress is also guided by the expertise of medical advisors Niklaus F. Friederich, Raphael Guzman, and Alexander Navarini.

Since its official launch in March 2024, CIO has developed strong collaborations within the University of Basel and with institutions both in Switzerland and internationally. Our dynamic team consists of postdoctoral researchers, PhD and masters’ students all contributing to advancements in intelligent optics.
