Prof. Ece Özkan Elsen

Prof. Dr. Ece Özkan Elsen is the group leader of Analytics and Informatics for Child Health. She obtained her PhD in Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich in 2018 and has since worked at ETH, MIT, and Deloitte before her appointment as BRCCH Assistant Professor of Paediatric Digital Health Data Analysis at the University of Basel in July 2025. Her research focuses on developing interpretable, fair, and generalizable machine learning methods that integrate medical images, clinical data, and physiological signals to support clinical decision-making in pediatric care, with the goal of improving diagnosis, treatment, and health outcomes for children.

Dr. Paul Fischer

Postdoctoral Researcher

Paul is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Prof. Ece Özkan Elsen's AICH group. His research focuses on quantifying and propagating uncertainty in machine learning models along the entire diagnostic pipeline. His work aims to guide clinical decisions and ultimately improve the trustworthiness and transparency of AI applications in pediatric medicine. He completed his PhD in Machine Learning as part of the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS) at Christian Baumgartner's Machine Learning in Medical Image Analysis Group at the University of Tübingen and the University of Lucerne.

Simon Böhi

PhD Student

Simon is a PhD student in AICH. He obtained his BSc in Computer Science and completed his MSc at ETH Zurich in 2025, specializing in visual computing and machine learning. His research interests lie in applying machine learning to healthcare and medicine.

Sergio Muñoz González

Software Engineer

Sergio is the Software Engineer of the Analytics and Informatics for Child Health group. With a background in Biotechnology and a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics from the Autonomous University of Madrid, he is focused on applied Artificial Intelligence and NLP. Before joining the team, he worked as an AI/ML engineer at EY and at Insud Pharma, where he developed generative AI tools for clinical trials and large-scale NLP applications.
