The Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBE) is proud to spotlight Prof. Philipp Honigmann on his appointment as Adjunct Professor of Hand Surgery and to congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.
Philipp Honigmann exemplifies interdisciplinary excellence, seamlessly bridging surgery with biomedical engineering and digital innovation. He is a senior consultant hand and general surgeon, trained at the University Hospital of Basel and Kantonsspital Baselland and received his venia docendi from the University of Basel in 2019.
He served as lead Physician of the Hand Surgery Unit at Kantonsspital Baselland, where he led the Hand and Peripheral Nerve Surgery program across multiple hospital sites. In 2025, he co-founded the Handcenter Northwestern Switzerland which is fully dedicated hand and peripheral nerve surgery.
At the DBE, Philipp Honigmann serves as Co-Head of the Swiss Medical Additive Manufacturing (Swiss MAM) Research Group, where his research focuses on patient-specific carpal implants, in-hospital 3D printing, bioresorbable polymers, high-performance biomaterials, laser-assisted osteotomy, 4D-CT–based kinematic analysis, and AI-supported surgical decision-making. His work has been instrumental in advancing and translating additive manufacturing technologies directly into clinical practice at the point of care.
An inspiring educator and mentor, Philipp Honigmann is deeply committed to teaching and knowledge exchange at all academic levels and is internationally active within professional societies and scientific boards. In 2026, he will further shape the field as Co-President of the European Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH) Congress in Basel.
With this appointment, the DBE proudly celebrates Philipp Honigmann’s outstanding contributions and looks forward to his continued impact at the forefront of biomedical engineering and surgical innovation.
