Every year since 2019, the DBE publishes an annual report spotlighting the milestones of the past year. It covers research highlights, events, outreach activities, media coverage, distinctions, awards, and many other topics that have made the DBE shine over the past year.
In Addition, the DBE publishes a monthly newsletter. The newsletter is circulated among members of the DBE only. Nonetheless you can browse through all previous newsletters from 2017 until today.
The year 2024 has turned out to be even more dynamic and successful for us than 2023. Above all, we celebrated our 10th birthday: Ten years ago, in November 2014, the Department of Biomedical Engineering was founded. At the 10th DBE Research Day on 21 August 2024, the 10th birthday was celebrated, with Hans-Florian Zeilhofer, founding father and major inspiration, looking back and into the future. From its genuinely humble beginnings, the DBE took a steep rise and will continue to do so in the coming years.
In January 2023, the DBE moved to its new premises with the aim of becoming a launch pad for truly translational engineering projects, a platform that allows researchers to take off and go where no one has gone before. These hopes have been fulfilled!
Three years ago, we started to plan our new department at the so called “Grand réseau d’innovation et de développement” in short, the GRID. The prospect of a new, customized work environment excited us all, and enthusiastically we started to plan our future labs, workshops and teaching area. We hardly believe that we would ever go through the predicted “valley of despair”, accompanying every change. For most of us this valley was the move itself. But now, after having re-installed our equipment, we can hardly believe how lucky we are to have this opportunity to work at our self-designed DBE@GRID.
We proudly present you our Annual Report for 2021. We are proud not only because it provides a vivid image of a very busy and successful year, but also because it shows that the DBE is doing fine. In other words: we are growing fast in every aspect.
Creativity is a delicate plant. Surrounded by too much work and stress, it does not grow, does not form blossoms and does not bear fruit. Creativity needs time, freedom and a playful attitude. Therefore, one would assume that Covid-19 and all the restrictions it came with have stifled the creativity of the researchers at the DBE. But this was not the case.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering bridges the gap between natural sciences and medicine. Our researchers come from a range of different disciplines and countries. They are aiming – in close collaboration with physicians of the University Hospital Basel, the University Children’s Hospital Basel and others – for feasible, problem-based and solution-oriented tools for patient-specific research and science-based treatment
