Biomechanical Outcome Research

The Biomechanical Outcome Research Group is committed to advancing the understanding of the human body's complexity and function, with the goal of improving treatment and rehabilitation for orthopaedic and trauma patients. By using motion capture technologies and patient-reported outcome measures, the group investigates how orthopaeadic conditions (e.g., osteoarthritis) and traumatic injuries (e.g., fractures) develop, progress, and respond to treatment. This approach also allows for detailed analysis of musculoskeletal function in relation to specific interventions. The group aims to address clinically relevant questions and to translate findings from research into clinical practice to improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes.

Applying laboratory-based biomechanical measurements in clinical settings is a key part of our research. We use marker-based, markerless, and inertial measurement unit-based motion capture system, force data, muscle activity and strength data to better understand how the musculoskeletal system functions in relation to diagnosis, tissue degeneration, treatment planning, and predicting outcomes.

The Biomechanical Outcome Research Group is affiliated with the Clinic for Orthopaedics and Traumatology at University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Basel, operating within the CADENCE Consortium.

Our current research projects focus on improving patient outcomes through personalized biomechanical analysis. One project aims to enhance the clinical diagnosis of shoulder pathology by integrating patient-specific biomechanical simulations with functional assessments and medical imaging. Another project investigates how native knee anatomy influences joint alignment and clinical outcomes after knee arthroplasty. By understanding these anatomical variations, we strive to optimize surgical planning and tailor treatments to improve long-term function and patient satisfaction.

The Biomechanical Outcome Research Group closely collaborates with the Clinic for Orthopaedics and Traumatology (University Hospital Basel), the Surgical Outcome Research  Center, the Department of Biomedicine (University of Basel).
