Hand surgery
Welcome to individualized, patient specific science and treatment in hand surgery!
You are a unique!
…and so is your anatomy!
Of cause, anatomical structures and functional relationships are very well investigated, but there are significant differences for instance in anthropometry. Did you know that one key player of the carpal bones - the scaphoid - varies in length between 27 mm (women) and 31 mm (men)? Those of females are thinner but in relation to the other surrounding carpal bones the scaphoid is longer then in men.
Another very important carpal bone - the lunate - has 5 different natural shapes, but for replacement (e.g. Kienböck’s disease) there is only one shape in 3 sizes available on the market!
We focus our research on the restoration of the individual anatomy, kinematics and biomechanics of the most complex human tool and mirror of our soul – the hand!
Life is motion – motion is life!
To understand biomechanics and kinematics of the hand, wrist and forearm we improve latest imaging and analytic emerging technologies which are implementable in daily clinical routine. In collaboration with industrial partners, we develop materials and tools for individualized patient specific surgical interventions as well as partial and full replacement of bones using biocompatible material. But to allow for natural motion and function of the joints, the structure and especially the correct fixation of bone, replacements need to be considered and investigated.
