MICCAI STAR Award and Best Paper Award for Alvaro Gonzalez-Jimenez

Alvaro Gonzalez-Jimenez of the Digital Dermatology Group has received a remarkable dual honor: the prestigious MICCAI STAR Award and the Best Paper Award for his outstanding contribution in the paper titled, "Robust T-Loss for Medical Image Segmentation." The paper was acknowledged as the best at MICCAI, an event known for its high competitiveness, having received an astounding 2253 submissions this year. The Student Author Registration (STAR) Award, in particular, offers invaluable support for first-author students to attend the conference in person.

The paper proposes a new robust loss function, the T-Loss, for medical image segmentation. The T-Loss outperforms conventional loss functions, particularly when dealing with ground truth masks that are too large, too small, or distorted. The key innovation lies in a single parameter that dynamically adjusts sensitivity to noise during gradient descent, eliminating the need for additional computations or prior information.
