Organisation
The Faculty of Medicine’s principle of short ways informs the organizational structure of the DBE. Is designed to enable:
- our researchers to contribute to the well-being of patients and
- our faculty to contribute to the careers of our students as efficiently as possible.
Such a structure, as shown in the organisation chart, must promote flexibility, trust and mutual inspiration at all levels. In addition it must support the growth of the department as well as of the entire discipline of biomedical engineering.
Currently, this is realized through the following elements:
The DBE Executive Board advises, plans and decides under the chairmanship of the Department Head about strategic affairs in teaching and research. It establishes commissions for individual tasks, if necessary. The Board consists of five members from the DBE and collaborating hospitals.

The Assembly comprises all DBE professors (structural and assistant professors), research group heads and one representative from each stakeholder group (one representative of associated groups and four representatives of employement group I - IV). The Assembly’s tasks are documented in the DBE regulations.
The DBE management team handles the administrative, financial, and logistical aspects of the department's research and study activities. It provides effective support to researchers, students, and employees, and ensures the smooth running of the department.
The team is also the first point of contact for potential collaborators, investors, communications professionals, and the general public.

The DBE Research Exchange Board organizes an maintaines translational structures and actions between the DBE, the other departments of the Faculty of Medicine, the institutions of the University of Basel, as well as the University Hospitals. Members are representatives of the President’s Board of the University of Basel, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine, representatives of the University Hospital Basel and the University Children’s Hospital Basel, as well as of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The Research Exchange Board is an instantiation of the Faculty’s goal of short ways and intricate collaboration among all its organs.
The Scientific Advisory Board is composed of international experts representing all focal areas of the department. Its members report to the Research Exchange Board and the Department Executive Board.
