Planning & Navigation

Accurate real-time navigation is essential for the realization of precise cuts using the MIRACLE. For minimally invasive interventions, state-of-the-art optical tracking systems, such as the positioning of passive and active optical markers, are not applicable due to the required line-of-sight. Therefore, a major part of the research of this group is devoted to the development of innovative navigation concepts to monitor the position of the laser tip and the entire shape of the endoscope inside the patient.

Furthermore, this group deals with the planning and the visualization of the progress of the intervention. For this purpose, medical imaging in combination with augmented reality techniques are used.

To meet the requirements for such a diverse field of research the planning and navigation group is an interdisciplinary team of physicists, biomedical engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians.
